Event News: Professional Athletes Raise Awareness and Funds for Haiti in Celebrity Bowling Match

(Washington, DC) – Several players from the National Basketball Association and National Football League participated in “Bowl for Haiti,” on Saturday August 7 to raise funds and awareness for the Center of Hope for Haiti. The event was presented by Former NBA player Laron Profit and Events by Illumine. The NBA’s Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City); Chris Paul (New Orleans); Andray Blatche (Washington); Richard Hamilton (Detroit); Baron Davis (LA Clippers), Chauncey Billups (Denver); Etan Thomas (Oklahoma City); Roger Mason (New York) along with the NFL’s Carlos Rogers (Washington) and Brian Westbrook (Philadelphia) attended the celebrity bowling match held at Lucky Strike Lanes in Washington, DC. Fans teamed with players in a friendly competition for an Apple iPad. Gospel Singer Y’Anna Crawley, from Black Entertainment Television’s “Sunday Best” surprised Profit with a birthday tribute. The event was hosted by WKYS 93.9 FM Personality Antonio The Cuban Cigar Smoker.
“This event was about awareness,” Laron Profit told the crowd of about 200 people. “There are still so many people suffering right now, and we cannot forget that.”
Proceeds so far are $5,000, and contributions are still being received. Sponsors were Servpro of Reston/Herndon and Baltimore Inner Harbor, Best Buy and Montgomery Sports Association.

NBA Players “Bowl for Haiti” August 7 at Lucky Strike Lanes in DC
Players Team-up with Fans to Raise Money for the Center of Hope for Haiti
(Washington, DC) – Several current and former National Basketball Association players will join forces on August 7 for “Bowl for Haiti,” a charity bowling match to take place at Lucky Strike in the heart of the Nation’s Capital. Sponsored by Best Buy and Servpro of Reston-Herndon/Baltimore Inner Harbor in association with the Montgomery Sports Association, this star-studded celebrity bowling match will include Kevin Durant (Oklahoma City); Baron Davis (LA Clippers); Richard Hamilton (Detroit); Brendan Haywood (Dallas); Jeff Green (Oklahoma City); Etan Thomas (Oklahoma City) and other NBA stars, who will each pair with fans to raise funds for the Center of Hope for Haiti, a non-profit 501 C3 that provides shelter, education, healthcare and other resources to Haitian residents. The time will be from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. Fans can donate $35 to play alongside a player and a $20 donation for general admission. About Laron Profit
Laron Profit played four seasons with the University of Maryland and made his NBA debut for the Washington Wizards against the Atlanta Hawks on November 2, 1999. He netted a career-high of 18 points against the Hawks on April 17, 2001. He pulled down a career-best eight rebounds and a career-high of seven steals on March 31, 2001 against Houston. In assists, his career-high was 14 April 11, 2001 against Chicago. Maryland Institute for Dance Welcomes Aspiring Dancers to Audition for School’s Open House Showcase
Auditions August 4, 6 to 8 p.m. at Liz Lerman Dance Exchange in Takoma Park, MD

Dancers may audition to perform an original/already-choreographed dance routine for MID’s showcase on August 28. Please bring music and other necessary audition materials. Song selections for auditions must also be used for showcase. Maryland Institute for Dance needs to see the choreography in its entirety during the audition process. The Maryland Institute for Dance is a traveling non-profit dance school created in 2010. Our mission is to provide quality dance education, to develop outstanding, goal-oriented and purpose-driven performers and highly sought-after dance instructors. The Maryland Institute for Dance supports the goals of young performers by providing scholarships for students to attend MID and also higher and private learning institutions. Clients/students include children ages 3 to 17 and adults who aim to perfect their dance or choreography skills or who desire to use dance as a fitness regime. Classes begin in September 2010.
