Prince George’s County, MD - The Fall edition of Prince George’s Suite magazine, available on newsstands now, is the largest issue in the publication’s history with nearly 100 pages devoted to the issues that matter most to the people of Prince George’s County. The Suite’s cover story, “When will Michelle be Our Guest?,” by Editor-at-large Olive Vassell, invites First Lady Michelle Obama to travel a few miles from the District to sample what Prince George’s has to offer, and explores what types of occasions and venues might draw her attention.

In Frank Dexter Brown’s feature, “Snapshots of Green,” he discusses the evolution of environmentally-friendly practices in our daily lives. He finds that being green has transitioned into the normal habits of life. Brown’s feature reveals many of the innovative green developments occurring in Prince George’s County, Maryland that are serving as models for the nation. This feature is the most comprehensive story of its kind on energy initiatives in the county this year.

“Through the efforts of environmentalists, government officials and business leaders, many county residents have become more aware of the dangers of global warming and are more active in considering comprehensive ways to mitigate climate change,” Brown said. “They are treating the environment as a significant part of everyday commitments and the basic responsibility of concerned citizenry.”

Also included in the new issue, are tips for business survival during tough times; news on the Bowie University Bulldog who is a free agent for the Pittsburgh Steelers; columns on beauty, health and hot county destinations!

“There are so many stories we are eager to tell at the Suite, which demonstrate the warmth, character and drive that so many residents here possess,” said Executive Editor Maria Lopez-Bernstein. “You can see it in their concern for family, quality of life, and the entrepreneurial spirit that so many embody. In our largest issue yet, we put those values on display.”

Prince George’s Suite was honored for its support of minority-owned businesses in the Washington metropolitan area during an MBE Awards reception sponsored by Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland and The Maryland Black Caucus Foundation.

“I’m honored that Prince George’s Suite Magazine is considered an innovative media outlet by the state’s most-influential business owners and elected officials,” said Publisher Raoul Dennis. “When we launched the magazine five years ago, the staff set out to present a new view of Prince George’s County, and to ensure that ground-breaking ideas and organizations would be presented in an authentic, new way. This award means that we’ve served the community well and are respected and appreciated by our peers.”

The event was part of the Minority Business Networking Reception, held at National Harbor during the Maryland Black Caucus Foundation 2009 Annual Weekend on October 2. Other recipients included minority-owned businesses that create jobs, make innovations and undertake leadership roles in their respective communities.

“We are extremely humbled, and quite frankly, surprised to receive this award,” said Executive Editor Maria Lopez-Bernstein. “There are so many hard-working business owners who toil away each day and no one will ever say, ‘Good job.’ So we are extremely grateful that the Black Caucus chose to recognize us for the work we do in representing the people of Prince George’s County.”

The program included remarks by Delegate Herman L. Taylor, Jr., District 14; Delegate Veronica L. Turner, chair of the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland; Maryland Black Caucus Foundation President Obie Patterson; and Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development Secretary Christian Johansson. Senator Catherine E. Pugh and Delegate Aisha Braveboy presented awards to 22 recipients and 23 honorable mentions.
